Rio Tinto – Dampier Asbestos Roof Refurbishment

PRC Building Services Pty Ltd completed a Project in the North West Region of Western Australia 2015.  Our Project was located in-between Karratha and Dampier just off Dampier Road.

The works comprised of the removal and replacement of roof sheeting which contained bonded Non Fibrous Asbestos , associated flashings , barges and capping’s to a Rolling Stock Maintenance Workshop.  A new cladding system was installed which included both insulation and safety mesh beneath the sheeting.  PRC Building Services removed and disposed of existing ridge vents and box gutters which were then replaced with a new ridge vent system and box gutter complete with a Syfonic System.

Due to the Project containing a Non Fibrous Bonded Asbestos component and the works being of such high risk, PRC Building Services treated this job with the highest degree of Safety.

To safely complete these works we used  a new portable handrail system.  The handrail is unique in that, unlike other methods, it is a freestanding structure and doesn’t need to be connected to the existing framework.  It also differs in that other handrails have to be fitted by a licensed person or rigger, while this system can be installed by anyone working on the roof.  This makes it quicker and easier to install.

The Workshop roof area is approximately 1.5 hectares and the workshop was fully operational whilst the works were proceeding.

This industrial workshop was constructed in 1971 and provided facilities and work areas for locomotive maintenance and ore-car maintenance.

The Project involved 30-40 staff and ran to schedule and under budget while keeping the operation running.
